Art Newsletter
The school year has started well and we are into the swing of things in our temporary art room. My teaching is based on the philosophy Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) where the child is the artist, the classroom is the child’s studio, and students learn what artists do. ELEMENTARY My youngest artists begin with basic tools and materials and will slowly be introduced to centers. Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade will not receive grades in art. Students in 3rd through 6th grade will have grades in PowerSchool. The first weeks of school are focused on procedures and opening centers. I just opened the maker space this week, so you should start seeing some amazing cardboard sculptures coming home soon. Some may not be as aesthetically pleasing as other art forms, but we can appreciate the creative process and effort that went into the artwork. I am planning to have Artsonia up and running within the next few weeks. Artsonia is an online portfolio where 3rd-6th grade students upload a photo of their favorite art pieces. You can view from home, make comments, purchase keepsakes from the company, and share your student’s artwork with family, which the kids absolutely love. Students who have not previously enrolled will be bringing home a permission slip with online instructions. Each child has a specific parent code that will link you to their artwork. JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL Some important changes in junior high and high school: artwork is turned in for a grade through Google Classroom. While there is opportunity for choice-based artmaking, every other week in high school there is a teacher-directed lesson. For my junior high students who are only in class once a week, communication through the GC stream is vital. Seventh grade students are getting acquainted with turning in work through Google Classroom, and it can take a little bit of getting used to. For any student struggling with this or missing an assignment, I am more than happy to work with them. Anytime a student’s grade drastically drops, it is most likely because they have a missing assignment. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. I can also take calls during my planning period 8th hour, or after school. Jenny Rueckert [email protected] 660-744-6296 ext. 119
